FORT KNOX, Ky. — A Fort Knox soldier has died in combat in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said Tuesday that 1st Lt. Robert F. Welch III of Denton, Texas, died Sunday of wounds he received when insurgents attacked his base in Khowst province. Welch, 26, was an ordnance officer assigned to Company B, 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke.

A news release from Fort Knox stated Welch was on his first combat tour. He entered the Army in October 2008 and arrived at Fort Knox in July 2009.

There will be a memorial service at Fort Knox on Friday in honor of him. There is also a memorial service scheduled for Thursday in Afghanistan.

Robby was a good kid and I was fortunate enough to work with him for a while when he was getting through college.

This image was taken at a ceremony honoring him, after the ceremony was over and I was able to capture the color guard ceremoniously, out of sight of most folks, retiring the colors. It was an honor to be there.
