Fort Lancaster

As my regular readers know, I made a mad dash across west Texas last year capturing images of many of Texas’ frontier forts.   Well, coming back home from Big Bend in November, I stopped by the last fort on my list, Ft. Lancaster.

Lancaster was built in 1855, and is located in some absolutely beautiful country.  Like a few of the other forts, a town never grew up around Lancaster, so you are able to experience the fort in its natural setting without modern intrusions.   It sits in a valley, surrounded by small buttes; and service there must have been rather lonely!

It’s well worth a short detour off of I-10.

  1. Nice one. That rock wall has a lot of character.

    • Thank you David – working on a post involving an Ansel Adams quote for next week, would enjoy hearing your thoughts on it once it’s published!
